Contrary to popular belief is "rheumatism" is not a disease, but the collective name for many incurable joint disease. The similarity between these diseases is that there is gradually increasing (irreparable) damage to the joints, such as the knees or joints in the fingers, or the muscles of the arms, legs, feet and / or finger control.

The Foundation RUN - Rheumatology Research Foundation University Nijmegen in full - is over 20 years ago. The Foundation supports scientific research into the causes of rheumatic diseases and new forms of treatment. This knowledge should lead to rheumatic diseases in the future to better treat and perhaps even cure. RUN Foundation works closely with rheumatologists and arthritis researchers in Nijmegen and surrounding regional hospitals with doctors and nurses rheumatism.

Thanks to money from the Foundation in Nijmegen RUN figured out how diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are formed. Knowledge about its causes is indeed needed to make better, more targeted forms of treatment for these diseases to be found. Another example is research on the way to more accurately measure how severe a person suffering from a rheumatic disease and how the symptoms in the change over time. Such measurements are needed in order to interpret whether or not the patient has something new (and existing) forms of treatment. And to this effect to be set against the cost of treatment.

In the near future the Foundation RUN money available for research into the development of a digital clinic for people with rheumatic disease. This means that patients with a (private) web site home to consult their treating physician, the patient that the physician can guide and support online and the online doctor doctor the patient can keep informed of all relevant developments in medical history. Something for the often already difficult patient moving a lot easier than any time going to the hospital or the doctor must make. The Foundation also focuses on research RUN for newer forms of rheumatism therapy. Another important research priority is to answer the question why the national and international guidelines for the treatment of people with arthritis in everyday practice is not always quite clearly revealed.
